Here’s an indication of the kind of humour we’re talking about: when the studio discussed how many vehicle skins to give away with the game, they quickly settled on four. For the life of me I can’t think of the juvenile, ultra-British puns that popped up on screen while I played, but they frequently made me guiltily chuckle. There’s loads more power-ups too, each with ludicrous names. Limbs went flying, flesh got fried, everything got doused in blood and I emerged from the stadium with about 8 minutes of bonus time. The first level, a cityscape (subsequent environments are far more exotic), had a few fun diversions, including a sports arena featuring an American football team, a group of cheerleaders and a power-up that electrocuted everything in the vicinity of your car. Progressing to further levels means earning more cash. And at the end of the level, you’ll be given a score based on how much cash you’ve got left. Meanwhile, if you do damage to your car you’ll have to spend cash to fix it on the fly. Cause damage to an enemy car, destroy it, successfully use a power-up, or kill a pedestrian and your time increases. And even that last one doesn’t really count against my point, because if you stick to the road you’ve messed up and you’ll run out of time. In it, you are tasked with beating your AI-controlled opponents by either a) ramming them until they explode, b) killing every single one of the 200-ish pedestrians on the map, or c) completing five laps before anyone else. If you stay on the track, you’re missing the point.Īll of this was driven home to me while playing the first level of the game’s Career mode. Environments are littered not just with pedestrians (there’s no bonuses for running over a particular kind of pedestrian, by the way, everyone’s equal), but also with explosive barrels, ramps, fun little secrets and power-ups (both helpful and unhelpful, a pinball power-up had my car pinging from walls and launching hundreds of feet up into the air when I lost control). To be fair to developers Stainless Games, Max Damage does pretty much reward you for driving into everyone and everything. I guess it’s enjoyable because it’s so wrong? I dunno, it’s probably best not to dwell. But that didn’t stop me laughing - in a “Haha, oh blimey” kinda way - as the wheelchair went flying into the air. It sounds very, very wrong in black and white. Yes, in Carmageddon: Max Damage you are encouraged to drive into disabled pedestrians. So you can now mow down nuns, pensioners with walking frames, and people in wheelchairs until your heart’s content. Ratings boards like the BBFC are far more understanding of our favourite hobby’s various quirks. Don’t get me wrong, it’s just as crazy as it was before and there’s even more ways to massacre innocent pedestrians, but these are different times. It rubbed the ratings boards up the wrong way and ensured that, initially at least, changes had to be made to get the game onto shelves.Ĭarmageddon: Max Damage will have no such problems.

An anarchic racing game inspired by the cult movie Death Race 2000, Carmageddon awarded bonuses for aggressively destroying enemy cars and reducing pedestrians to puddles of gore. The original Carmageddon caused a bit of a fuss when it was first released in 1997.
